Read these in order.

The first two take about twenty minutes together. Then climb — and don't rush: rungs 1–3 are where most of the value is for most people. Each rung ends with a gate, a short test of whether you're truly ready for the next one.

  1. 1 Rung 0: Foundations — the nine terms you need before anything else, in plain English.
  2. 2 The Context pillar — the one big idea about how AI "remembers" (and doesn't). Ten minutes that will save you months of confusion.
  3. 3 Rung 1: Chat — open a free AI chat tool and actually begin.
  4. 4 The worksheet — pick one recurring task from your own work and carry it up the ladder with you. It's how the framework becomes real.
The one idea behind everything

Five rungs. One moving part: you.

Working with AI is a ladder with five rungs. What changes at each rung is not the AI — it's you: how much of the work you hand over, and where you apply your judgment. That's why it's called the Judge Ladder: at every rung, your job is judgment. Climbing just changes where you apply it.

5 Autonomous / multi-agent AI runs inside limits you set; you check the record after. 4 Single-purpose agent You give the AI a goal and review its finished work. 3 Supervised action The AI can do things — each action waits for your OK. 2 Prompt workflows You save and reuse your best instructions. 1 Chat You talk with an AI; it answers. You steer every exchange. 0 Foundations Haven't started? This rung assumes nothing. Begin here.
